Manmade Artificial Kelp Barriers

It is common knowledge that Kelp forests help protect coastal regions by dissipating the energy in waves and storms, sometimes up to 80%. Reducing the damage that these forces inflict on the shore and infrastructures at sea. However natural native Kelps also have an achelies heel, they take a long to to establish, they are susceptible to disease and can be damaged by the very force they are try to calm.

At Ulva Sea Farms we have successfully trialed manmade Kelp blades, made from natural organic materials, coated in a seaweed biopolymer. They are hardy and weather resistant, they can be deployed at sea quickly and easily. We call them Sea Blades and they are equally if not better at reducing the energy in a wave and more cost effective.

Sea Blades are deployed either in long lines or in blocks, calming the effects of waves and so reducing the damage caused in a rough sea. Because the Sea Blades are not made of plastic, they are 100% environmentally friendly. Working with nature not against it.
